Savannah State University is a historically black university located in Savannah, Georgia. SSU was originally founded, in 1890, as the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth. The college was located in Athens, Georgia, for several months during 1891 until moving to its permanent location in Savannah. In 1932, the school became known as Georgia State College. In 1950, the school changed its name to Savannah State College and gained university status in 1996. SSU operates WHCJ-FM 90.3 FM community radio, which is known as "the Voice of Savannah State University" and plays everything from classic jazz, latin and blues to gospel and African American educational programming. In 1998 and 1999, WHCJ-FM aired "The Push Show" with host Randy playing electronic, ambient and downtempo music.
Savannah State's colors are Burnt Orange and Reflex Blue and its nickname is the Tigers. Savannah State sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (I-AA for football) and are independent. In the 2004-05 season, the Savannah State men's basketball team achieved the dubious honor of being only the second Division I school since 1955 to play through the entire regular season without winning a single game. The 0-28 campaign earned considerable attention in the sports media, being featured in a "Winless Watch" on ESPN's Sportscenter that recounted each loss throughout the year.
