South Western is a rail franchise that is to combine South West Trains and Island Line into one new company. These are currently owned by Stagecoach, who are one of the current bidders. The new franchise is yet to be named and bidded. The franchise will run for ten years. Currently there are four bids (as of April 2006) for control of the franchise South Western bids. Of note, one of the bidders Trafalgar trains (from National Express) backed out in March 2006.
The franchises of South West Trains and Island Line are currently due to expire when this franchise comes into fruition. They expire in February 2007.
Whoever wins the franchise will be required to install Oyster Pre Pay across the suburban network, which will, in time, reduce the fares.
