FC Schalke 04 is a German football club originally from the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Schalke has long been one of the most popular football teams in Germany, even though major successes have been rare since the club's heyday in the 1930s and early 1940s. As of early 2006, the club has over 55,000 members, mostly passive supporters. Sports activities offered by the club include basketball, handball, and track and field.

ESPN said Sunday’s game received a 2.6 cable rating and was seen in 2.6 million homes. The audience was the third largest to watch the team on ESPN, trailing the audience for the 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Germany at the 2002 World Cup and the 2-1 victory over Colombia in the first round of the 1994 World Cup.
